Description
Experience the ancient city of Rome through food and wine on this 4 day, 3 night trip to Italy. You’ll be amazed by the architecture as you walk around this outside museum with historical points at every turn. You’ll have the chance to see the grandeur of ancient Rome’s Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, and more. You’ll enjoy a day outside of Rome tasting wine and making pasta – Italian classics. There will also be plenty of free time for you to check in with work or check off the top things on your bucket list. 

Morning

Arrivals and make your way to the accommodation. We will provide airport transfers for the suggested arrival flights. If you arrive outside these times, we will provide detailed instructions to take a private taxi or public transport. You’ll check into you accommodation in the Rome City Center.  Afternoon
Once everyone has arrived and checked in, we will have our first gathering for lunch. The lunch will be a hearty 3 course meal with wine. 

Evening

Do happy hour the way Romans do- with an aperitivo! An aperitivo is a pre-meal drink; the experience of aperitivo is a cultural ritual. Derived from the Latin aperire, the tradition is meant “to open” the stomach before dining. We will join the locals on small tables on the cobblestone streets to have a drink and charcuterie aperitivo. You will have a sample of some of Rome’s staples: bruschetta, prosciutto, and of course various Italian cheeses.

Day 2
Morning
Breakfast will be available at the accommodation or you can check out a local cafe for an Italian espresso and croissant as the locals do. There will be an early morning walking tour: a two hour historical walking tour of some of Rome’s most famous sites such as: Colosseum, Imperial Forum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and Piazza Navona.

Afternoon

We’ll head off on the best of Roman street food tour. This will be a walk of the tastebuds in central Rome. The tour will take us to a famous Roman bakery, one that has been in the family since the 1800s. Their bread recipes have been a family secret since then and are used to create some the best pizza crust found in Rome. Guests will sample the traditional Roman thin crust pizza. If you want more pizza- not to worry, up next is the Trapizzino. Trapizzino is a play on words that comes from the union of the words tramezzino (the classic Italian triangular sandwich found in many bars) and pizza; trapizzino is half sandwich, half pizza. The dough is that of pizza, shaped in the form of a triangle, made with lievito madre (starter), soft inside, crunchy outside. We will sample the “hunters chicken”- which is a mixed of marinated chicken with rosemary and white wine. There is also an eggplant parmesan option for vegetarians. Our Trapezzino is accompanied with Steaming and seasoned risotto, left to cool and rolled up to hide in its centre a surprise, or rather an overtake, like the etymology of the word surprise suggests. Finally, it is breaded and fried.

Afterwards, we will take a nice walk through the beautiful neighborhood of Trastevere to get to our artisanal gelateria. This gelateria was founded by a woman who wanted to source sustainable products to produce the traditional Italian gelato. All of this gelato is created from the source of the ingredients- no artificial flavors here! Must try- the almond cream flavor! 

Evening

The walk will end at one of Rome’s favorite beer bars. This little hole in the wall is famous for its selection of craft beer on draft from all over Europe. The offerings change every week. This no frills kind of place, and has a limited number of tables inside. Most people do take away beers and drink on the street as many of the Romans will be doing at the bustling place on a Friday night. Beer not your thing? No worries- there is another place across the street to have a glass of wine or a cocktail.
Day 3Morning
Breakfast will be served at the accommodation before we depart for a half trip to the town of Frascati.  Afternoon
We will catch an early morning train to Frascati, a beautiful hillside town just outside of Rome. We will have a tour of the town and then begin our sampling of the two Frascati wines and you will
prepare handmade pasta for lunch! You’ll have free time to explore the town before we head back to Rome. Mid-afternoon is  free to explore or relax and watch time pass by on the streets of Rome.  Evening
(Optional) Roman style pizza made in the traditional
forno al legno! (woodfire oven) This pizzeria is a Roman staple, with a casual rustic decor with arguably the best homemade Tiramisu in Rome served in a mason jar! (From €15.00) This pizzeria also offers a selection of Roman pasta classics such as amatriciana and carbonara and fresh handmade pasta. We think a must try is the Artichoke jewish style (fried) as a starter and tiramisu as a dessert. This place also has Italian beers, forget peroni and nastro azzurro, try their Morretti specialty beers or the island of Sardegna’s pride: Ichnusa.

(Optional) We’ll make a reservation for a Truffle experience you won’t want to miss. Everything on this menu is truffle! Guests can choose between white or black truffle dishes. They even have truffle fondue. Friendly waitstaff will guide you through the menu as well as assist with a wine pairing for your meal. This quaint restaurant is tucked away between the bustling streets and offers one of Italy’s treasures at a reasonable price (From €30.00+). We think you must try the truffle fondue!

Day 4

Morning
Breakfast will be served at the accommodation. The rest of the morning / afternoon is free to explore on your own depending on when your flight departs. You will be provided with proper information on how to get back to your proper airport. We have prepared an optional activity which can be done in the morning if the group is feeling up for it. Transport in a taxi can be organized and is not included: 

(Optional) Sunday Morning Stroll along the Appia Antica, the ancient road that leads us to Rome. Along this historic walk there are many catacombs sites, aqueducts and ruins of villas. The Via

Appia Antica is the old Roman Appian Way, one of the oldest and most important roads from Rome. During ancient Roman times, the road was essential in transporting troops down to the port
of Brindisi in southeast Italy.

Tourist attractions along the Appian Way include the Catacombs of San Callisto and Catacombs of San Sebastiano (tickets needed for entry) as well as various basilicas and tombs. The stretch close to Rome of the Via Appia Antica is now part of a nature and archaeological park, the Parco Regionale dell’Appia Antica. It  makes a lovely day out, particularly on Sundays when the area is closed to traffic. This unique experience allows for a beautiful refuge and touch of nature nestled within the bustling city of Rome.

Things You Should Know
Special clothing required – Comfortable walking shoes to walk around the city. 

There may be Covid restrictions at night or certain venues might require proof of vaccination or negative Covid test to enter.

You will already know that we value community at Remote Year, and believe the more the merrier! That’s why our Side Trips are often open to more than one program, from more than one RY city. What does this mean? If you chose a shared room option, you may be allocated a room with someone who is not on your program. We will try to accommodate any rooming requests, but this can’t be guaranteed. If mixed programs, we will introduce you all beforehand via Slack so you can start to make plans together. You’ll all have the same point of contact.

What is the refund policy?

For questions concerning refunds, please email [email protected]. Please note most bookings made within 24 hours are fully refundable. Bookings made outside the 24 hour policy are not eligible for a refund. Please keep in mind, we will automatically refund bookings that are disrupted by extreme weather conditions, last minute cancellations from our suppliers or the minimum number is not met by the booking deadline.

What happens if my booking is changed/cancelled due to weather?

We’ll control the weather. Just kidding! Remote Year can’t control the weather or many other factors that go into planning events. In the event of a change due to weather, the City Manager will do their best to provide a make-up option. Due to last minute changes and busy monthly schedules, we cannot guarantee it works for everyone but we’ll do our best! If you are not able to attend the make-up date(s), we will fully refund your booking.

I have a discount or gift code, can I use it to complete my purchase?

Yes, once you add your item to your cart and check out, you will be able to input the code before completing the purchase. If you need help finding your code, please double check your inbox. You received an email from Marketplace with the code.

Can I book for a friend / family member?

Yes! We welcome your friends and family coming to visit you while you travel the world. Please refer to our Friends and Family policy: Friends & Family (visitors of active Remotes and active Citizens) may be granted access to private Remote Year events, Local Experiences, Side Trips, Community Events, Local Amenity and Services at an extra cost determined by the Marketplace or City Team. Remote Year reserves the right to deny access to Friends / Family who are over using Remote Year services. To avoid abuse of services, non-active Citizens, op-out Remotes, or Remotes who have left a Program can not use services as Friends & Family of Active Remotes or Active Citizens.

I haven’t received a booking confirmation email, can you help? If I cannot attend, can I transfer my ticket to someone else?

Yes, you may transfer your ticket to another Remote, Citizen or Family/Friend. Please notify the City Manager as soon as possible to confirm the change. Please note, in the case of special dietary requirements, we might not be able to accommodate special requests on last minute changes. Any bookings that require advanced ticketing linked to an individual’s ID might not be approved.

I’m not currently an active Remote Year participant, can I still book?

As a non-active Remote or Citizen, you forego access to any private Remote Year events including Core Experiences, Local Experiences, Community Events, Local Amenity and Services through the Marketplace. Exemptions will be made on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the City Manager.
