Helle there,
i don’t have any tech issues, also dont really seek how-to’s or lectures. BasicallyI just want an opinion on VPN Speeds ![]()
All assumptions apply:
Assumption 1: The bandwidth on the clientside is always higher than on my side (both directions). So the lowest common denominator is a 100/100 Mbit.
Assumtion 2: There is a IP-SEC Tunnel between two sites configured on opnsense, and a WIREGUARD server for small endpoints.
Assumption 3: only 1 active VPN Connection at a time
Assumption 4: On the target network (VPN-server/my network), runs a reliable speed-test container (“OpenSpeedtest”).
Observation 1
On WIREGUARD, the clients, mostly Windows Notebooks or mobile devices, can utilize UP TO 60% of the available bandwith.
Basicly running a speed test from the client against the internal Speed-Test server on my network, gives me ~60Mbit in both directions.
Observation 2
There is a IpSEC Tunnel between two sides (also limited by my 100/100 Mbit WAN).
Speedtests in both directions can utilize up to 90% of the available Bandwith. Resulting in Speedtest results of 89-92Mbit in both directions.
Question:
So, my rather simple Question is: Is that “normal” and should I leave it be, or is the WIREGUARD performance way below expected speeds and I should investigate further?
