About BikeAlameda

BikeAlameda's mission is to encourage everyday use of the bicycle in and around Alameda. We work to increase the city's bicycle network and facilities, to educate the community about the benefits of safe bicycling, and to provide a community to which Alameda bicyclists can belong. We believe in safe streets, convenient access, thriving business districts, clean air and active, healthy citizens. BikeAlameda is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) California corporation. Read More...

What's New

Join BikeAlameda's 4th of July Parade Entry!

This year's 4th of July parade's theme is "Alameda: Green and Clean," which fits BikeAlameda perfectly! If you've never been in a parade, here's your chance! It's a fun, uplifting experience and real easy to do. Participants last year had a blast in the parade. To join the BikeAlameda parade entry email our leaders, Loretta Chopey and Jim Strehlow (LoRaider@aol.com, jimstrehlow@alamedanet.net), and let them know you plan on joining.

Once we know our staging location, they'll let you know where and when to meet to line up for the parade. Although it's optional, we encourage folks to decorate their bikes and include a sign indicating something about why or where you bike, or the benefits of biking (ex: "I bike for my health," "Biking is zero emissions," "I haven't filled up my gas tank for months", "I bike to the movies," "I bike to see the world," etc.). The sign doesn't have to be anything fancy, just use large lettering so it is easily read along the parade route as you bike by, with BikeAlameda written on there somewhere too please. You can attach signs to a basket in the front, and/or on the sides of your bike rack using lots of plain old scotch tape. Another option if the signs material is pretty sturdy, is to punch holes in the sign and attach it to the bike with string (no dangling ends). We'll provide materials for signs and decoration at our staging area while waiting for the parade to start if you'd rather not do this on your own at home. The most important thing is to come join us! The more the merrier. Wear your helmet please so we set a good safety example for the public. A huge thank you to our BikeAlameda volunteer leaders Loretta and Jim, and to all of our parade volunteers who join to represent BikeAlameda this year!

Let's roll!

Alert - Your help is need on bike ban in parks - Tues. July 1

As some of you may know by our discussion list or today's Alameda Journal, last week the city council changed the Alameda Municipal Code to ban bicycle riding ..."within or upon any public park, playground or school property in the city"...  (See the specific new wording below.)  This would include large parks like Washington Park with its many biking and walking paths, Crab Cove and Crown Beach, and neighborhood parks like McKinley and Franklin Parks.

WANT TO HELP THE CITY OF ALAMEDA WITH ITS BICYCLE PLAN UPDATE?

The City of Alameda is updating its Bicycle Master Plan. Part of this project is to document existing conditions of bicycle-related facilities throughout Alameda. To facilitate the data collection for this task, we are seeking assistance from local bicyclists, since you use the bicycle network on a regular basis. At this stage, we are working on completing an inventory of all bicycle racks in Alameda, as well as identifying needs for minor capital improvements, as described below.
